Brighton Beach Range Lighthouses, Charlottetown
The Brighton Beach Front Range Lighthouse stands as a beautifully preserved symbol of PEI's coastal charm. Constructed in 1889, this modestly sized, square, tapered wooden tower rises approximately 12.2 meters and is clad in weathered white shingles, accented by red trims-including a small lantern room embellished with painted maple leaves.
The Front Range Lighthouse was strategically positioned at the junction of the North River and Charlottetown Harbour to guide vessels safely through a narrow channel between Hillsborough Bay and the harbour. By aligning with its companion Rear Range Light, sailors could maintain a safe course into port, a vital aid that facilitated the city's maritime trade and economic growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Standing approximately 398 metres inland and reaching a loftier 18.4 metres, the Brighton Beach Rear Range Lighthouse complements its front counterpart with a concrete structure built in 1968. Known for its distinctive "apple-core" hexagonal shape and spiral interior staircase-the only one of its kind on PEI-it emits a fixed yellow light intended to align with the front light for navigational precision.
Today, the Brighton Beach Range Lights remain active navigational aids and cherished landmarks. The front light, designated under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act in 2013, continues to reflect Charlottetown’s enduring maritime character. Though access inside may be restricted, visitors can admire the front lighthouse up close.
