Cairns Presbyterian Church, Cairns

Cairns Presbyterian Church, Cairns

Cairns Presbyterian Church, situated in Cairns, has strong ties to the principles of the 16th-century Reformation. One of its core beliefs is that salvation is obtained solely through God's grace, and individuals respond to this with faith alone. The church recognizes Jesus Christ as the primary leader and mediator, and it strictly follows the teachings of the Bible, upholding the principle of "Sola Scriptura." All activities and teachings within the church are geared towards bringing glory to God.

Historically, the first Presbyterian service in Cairns was led by Reverend James Pattison in 1901 at the Oddfellows Hall. This marked the beginning of the Presbyterian community in the area. In 1905, they constructed their first Presbyterian Church, named Saint Andrews. The initial structure was made of timber and remarkably withstood damage from three cyclones before being replaced in 1952.

The foundation stone of the current building was laid in August 1952, marking the construction of a structure notable for its 'Norman cloistered style,' designed by the architect Thomas Jamieson Roy. This new building, constructed of red brick with a timbered ceiling, was officially opened and dedicated on March 28, 1953, by the Right Rev. Malcolm MacDermant, who was then serving as the Moderator of the Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Queensland.
