Calle Alcala (Alcala Street), Madrid
Without a doubt, Calle Alcalá stands as one of Madrid's most authentic streets, frequently celebrated in popular songs about the city. This historic thoroughfare, whose construction commenced in the 15th century, has borne witness to the progress, transformation, and significant historical events of the capital.
Originally known as Calle de los Olivares, the street derived its name from the adjacent olive grove that once adorned its surroundings. However, it underwent a name change when Queen Isabella I of Castile ordered the removal of the grove due to the presence of numerous criminals.
During much of the 19th century, Calle Alcalá earned the moniker "Bankers' Street" as it emerged as the financial hub not just for Madrid, but for the entire country. Today, it still maintains a certain financial influence, exemplified by institutions such as the Banco de España.
Stretching over a remarkable length of more than ten kilometers, Calle Alcalá proudly holds the distinction of being Madrid's longest street and ranks as the third longest in all of Spain, boasting nearly 600 addresses. Only Gran Vía de Les Corts Catalanes and Valencia in Barcelona surpass it in length.
Notably, a section of Calle Alcalá has historically served as a Cañada Real, a traditional livestock route. To this day, the annual Transhumance Festival ("Fiesta de la Trashumancia") takes place, where shepherds assert the street's historical connection to the Cañada by guiding sheep through the heart of the city near Alcalá Gate ("Puerta de Alcalá"). It is truly a remarkable sight to behold.
