Capilla de la Divina Providencia (Chapel of Divine Providence), San Salvador

The Chapel of Divine Providence is known around the world as the site where Saint Óscar Romero was assassinated while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980. This moment marked a turning point in El Salvador’s history and in the Catholic Church. In 1997, Pope John Paul II recognized Romero as a Servant of God, beginning the process that would eventually lead to his canonization as a saint. Since then, this chapel has become a meaningful destination for pilgrims seeking to honor his legacy and learn more about his life.

Right next to the chapel is the House Museum of Monsignor Romero-the very place where he lived as Archbishop of San Salvador until the day he was killed. It’s a quiet, powerful space that preserves many of his personal belongings: his modest bedroom, his car, his bishop’s vestments, his personal library, and even relics from the day of his martyrdom. Walking through the house, visitors often leave with a sense of peace and a renewed admiration for the courage and compassion that defined his life.

Also on the grounds is the Hospital Divina Providencia, run by a community of religious sisters. Their mission is one of compassion and care, as they devote themselves to supporting patients with terminal cancer-another lasting tribute to Romero’s mission of service to the most vulnerable.
