Casa Calfelor (House of Journeymen), Sibiu

The modern journey of traveling craftsmen in Sibiu began 28 years ago when Oliver Eberlein, a young carpenter, first appeared in his distinctive attire in this small town. It took another nine years for the first large group of journeymen to arrive in Sibiu. In 2002, these craftsmen restored the roof of the tower at Huet Square No. 3, the city's oldest building, which was later reopened as the House of Journeymen.

This unique establishment is the only journeyman's house in Southeastern Europe and hosts hundreds of craftsmen from various journeyman brotherhoods and associations from Germany, France, Switzerland, and Austria each year. The House of Journeymen, along with the "nail tree" in front of it, acts as a living museum, preserving the legacy of the many journeymen who have passed through its doors. Its rich history and captivating stories have made it a significant tourist attraction. The House of Journeymen Sibiu Association, which manages the building, is dedicated to promoting artisanal crafts, the journeyman tradition, and the sharing of knowledge among young people from all over Europe.

They organize open workshops, training courses, sculpture symposiums, and various cultural events, including concerts, theater performances, film screenings, and discussion evenings. The journeymen are young craftsmen or artists who forgo the comforts of home to embark on a journey of at least three years and a day, traveling the world to refine their skills and grow both personally and professionally.
