Casa Consistorial de Bilbao (Bilbao City Hall), Bilbao

The Bilbao City Hall is a magnificent landmark that artfully blends civic purpose with timeless elegance. Designed by architect Joaquín Rucoba and completed in 1892, this Baroque-style masterpiece stands on the historic site of the former San Agustín convent, destroyed during the First Carlist War.

The façade projects a impressive symmetry inspired by French Third Republic public architecture. A grand central axis features a balcony, three archways supported by eight columns, and a domed clock tower crowning the structure. Intricate sculptures-including relief portraits of notable Basque figures, along with allegorical figures of Law and Justice-enhance the building's historical resonance. Tradition even holds that the fifth step on the grand staircase corresponds to Bilbao’s official elevation above sea level: 8.804 meters.

Inside, the city hall dazzles visitors with richly decorated interiors. The reception room shines in a neo-Arab style reminiscent of Granada’s Alhambra palace, while the assembly hall and stairwell boast grand Neo-Renaissance design. Local and international artisans contributed to artistic details: furniture from Bordeaux and lighting fixtures from Paris add cosmopolitan flair.

For those curious to look beyond its gorgeous exterior, the Bilbao City Council offers guided tours-available weekday mornings. These immersive experiences reveal the elegant salons, halls, and inner architectural features. Advance booking is recommended.

Bilbao's Old Town Walking Tour

Bilbao's old town, also known as The Seven Streets, is the medieval heart of the city. Indeed, this ancient neighborhood, a place where the city began and which had been fortified by walls until the late 19th century, today consists of seven main streets and many narrow alleys – called cantons (kantoi, cantón) – that connect them.

Often regarded as a jewel of Basque architecture and...  view more
