Cascade at Charlecote's grounds, Stratford-upon-Avon

Charlecote Park stands as an impressive 16th-century estate nestled within its own deer park, gracing the banks of the River Avon near Wellesbourne. Situated approximately 4 miles (6 kilometers) east of Stratford-upon-Avon and 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) south of Warwick, in Warwickshire, England, this historic site has been under the care of the National Trust since 1946, welcoming visitors to explore its grounds. Notably, it holds the distinction of being a Grade I listed building.

The esteemed Lucy family, tracing their lineage back to William the Conqueror, have held ownership of this land since 1247. Sir Thomas Lucy erected Charlecote Park in 1558, with the illustrious Queen Elizabeth I even gracing its quarters during her time. While retaining the fundamental structure of the Elizabethan era, the estate has undergone significant Victorian-era modifications.

The grandeur of Charlecote Park is evident in its Great Hall, boasting a barrel-vaulted ceiling crafted from painted plaster mimicking timber, providing an exquisite backdrop for the collection of esteemed family portraits. Additionally, the original two-story Elizabethan gatehouse stands proudly, unaltered, as the guardian of the house's approach.

Spanning across 185 acres (75 hectares) of land, the estate extends to the banks of the River Avon, adding to its picturesque charm. Look away from the house and walk along the trimmed path towards the waterfall located at the top end of the lake. This waterfall, also serving as a barrier, helps in keeping the water level of the lake stable.
