Castello Baradello (Baradello Castle), Como

Baradello Castle (Castello Baradello) crowns a wooded hill rising about 430 meters above Lake Como, commanding an unforgettable view of the lake, the city of Como, the Po Valley, and the distant Alps. Originally built atop ancient Roman and Byzantine fortifications, today's structure dates from the 12th century-rebuilt and enhanced by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa after he aided Como in its war against Milan-and formally gifted to the citizens of Como in 1178. Its enduring stone tower, notably the only part spared when Spanish forces dismantled the fortress in 1527, now offers visitors a striking symbol of the city’s resilience.

The site is part of the scenic Spina Verde Regional Park, a network of walking trails weaving through woodland, archaeological sites, and military relics, offering a pleasant moderate hike to the castle from Como’s outskirts in about 45–60 minutes. Once at the summit, you can explore the imposing Romanesque tower, whose footprint measures roughly 8 × 8 meters and reaches a height of about 28 meters to the top of its remnants of its crenellations. Information panels and modest exhibits often highlight the site's evolution over centuries, from Roman prehistory and Byzantine defenses to medieval rivalries.

As you ascend the tower, you'll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views: the blue expanse of Lake Como, terracotta-roofed Como, and the lush green hills beyond. On clear days, the plains of Lombardy and the snow-capped Alps are visible on the horizon. For history enthusiasts, visiting the castle evokes stories of political intrigue, such as the imprisonment of Napo Torriani after the battle of Desio, when he was confined in a cage hanging from the tower walls until his death.

Today, Baradello Castle remains one of Como’s most evocative landmarks, beloved by hikers, photographers, and history buffs alike. Guided or self‑guided visits (typically concentrated in spring through autumn) help bring its layered past to life. Many travelers also enjoy the annual Palio del Baradello festival, which dramatises medieval life and commemorates the alliance between Como and Barbarossa, adding another dimension to the castle’s living legacy.

All this she found on the shores of Lake Como. From Roman writer Pliny the Younger onward, visitors and natives of Como would have agreed.
