Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford

Cathedral of St. Joseph, Hartford

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford serves as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Hartford and is a striking example of mid-20th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Located on Farmington Avenue just outside downtown Hartford, it was built after the original cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1956. The current structure was dedicated on May 15, 1962, and can seat approximately 1,750 people, not including its two side chapels.

Designed by the New York firm Eggers & Higgins, the new cathedral embodies an International Style interpretation of the Gothic tradition. Rising to 284 feet, the building’s tall limestone spire and vertically oriented facade preserve the lofty spirit of its predecessor. The facade features a massive frieze of Saint Joseph and bronze doors weighing over five tons, decorated with biblical scenes. The bell tower houses 12 bells crafted in the Netherlands by Petit & Fritsen.

Inside, the cathedral showcases French stained glass windows reminiscent of those in Paris's Sainte-Chapelle. A ceramic tile mural behind the altar, titled Christ in Glory, is believed to be the largest of its kind in the world. Hungarian artist János Hajnal designed the etched glass wall separating the narthex from the nave, representing the Kingdom of Christ on earth and in heaven.

Consecrated in stages between 1960 and 1962, the cathedral also reused the cornerstone from the original structure. In 1979, it was listed as a contributing property in the Asylum Avenue Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. As both a spiritual center and architectural landmark, the Cathedral of Saint Joseph continues to play a central role in Hartford’s religious and civic life.
