Central Train Station, Varna
The Central Train Station it’s one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most picturesque railway stations. The very first station in Varna began operations on October 26, 1866, marking a significant milestone when the railway line between Varna and Ruse was inaugurated.
The elegant station building that stands today was constructed in stages between 1908 and 1925, under the direction of architects Nikola Kostov and Kiro Marichkov, and officially opened by Tsar Boris III. Architecturally, the station is a standout-its design harmoniously blends Art Nouveau with Neo-Baroque elements. Italian architects contributed to its ornate interior and exterior details, and in 1929 a precision-made German clockwork was installed in its clock tower.
Historically, Varna Station played a crucial role in European travel. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it served as an arrival point for Orient Express passengers, who would conveniently transfer to ferries bound for Constantinople. Its significance continues today-Varna remains an essential railway junction connecting travelers to Sofia, Rousse, Plovdiv, and beyond.
