Chapel and Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace, Port Louis

Chapel and Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace, Port Louis

Perched high on the slopes of Signal Mountain, the Chapel and Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace is one of the island’s most meaningful places of worship. Built around a three-metre statue of the Virgin Mary carved from Carrara marble, the site was established in 1940 by Bishop James Leen. He entrusted Mauritius to her protection during the uncertainty of the Second World War. The monument, notably depicting Mary holding a globe, reflects both a local act of faith and a broader sense of spiritual guardianship.

Over time, the shrine has grown into a focal point for Catholic devotion, drawing pilgrims throughout the year, particularly during the Feast of the Assumption. Its importance has been further marked by visits from Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. Rising 44 metres above sea level, the site is arranged across seven terraces connected by 82 steps.

At the summit, the modern chapel and surrounding gardens create a calm, open space for prayer and reflection. From here, wide views of Port Louis stretch out below.
