Chapelle Sainte-Elisabeth (Saint Elizabeth Chapel), Villefranche-sur-Mer
The Saint Elizabeth Chapel was built around 1595 and originally housed the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit, as symbolized by the dove engraving above the door lintel. In the 18th century, it was taken over by the Brotherhood of Humiliated Sisters, who dedicated it to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, giving it its present name. Over time, the chapel's role shifted, reflecting the evolving needs of the community.
From 1945, the chapel served as a municipal market, before being repurposed in 1951 as a meeting hall for the municipal council, a role it retained until 1981. In 1990, it was transformed into a temporary exhibition space spanning 87 m², now equipped with picture rails and lighting ramps to host various art displays. Today, while no longer a place of worship, the chapel continues to serve as an important cultural venue in Villefranche-sur-Mer.
