Charlestown Bridge, Boston
Acting as the Charles River’s easternmost handshake, the Charlestown Bridge links Boston’s North End with Charlestown, doing the practical work of a bridge while quietly showing off some very good views. Also known as the North Washington Street Bridge, it first entered the scene in 1900 and became part of the route followed by the Freedom Trail, leading walkers onward toward the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill.
Of course, this stretch of Boston has not always been all scenic pauses and patriotic foot traffic. In earlier decades, the area also had its share of rougher neighborhood drama, including Irish and Italian gang rivalries that made the bridge less of a peaceful crossing and more of a front-row seat to local tension. History, as usual, did not ask anyone for a comfort rating...
Today, the mood is much easier on the nerves. Stepping onto the bridge, you get wide views toward Boston Harbor and the Zakim Bridge, with enough open sky and water to make you forget, albeit briefly, that you are still in the middle of a busy city. It's a good place to slow down, take in the skyline, and let the Freedom Trail breathe for a moment before moving on.
And since even history walkers require fuel, the nearby Sorelle Bakery is ready to assist. The generous choice of muffins, cookies, coffee, and lunch options makes it a strong argument for a strategic pause. There is even a tucked-away patio, which feels like a small urban secret—just the thing when you have heard enough about liberty and would now like a pastry...
