Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple, Yangon
Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple is a significant Buddhist temple known for its large reclining Buddha image. The Buddha statue, which is 66 meters long, is one of the largest and most revered in the country.
The original construction of the temple began in 1899, sponsored by a wealthy Burmese Buddhist named Sir Po Tha. However, the initial image completed in 1907 had proportional issues and an aggressive facial expression. Consequently, it was demolished in the 1950s.
A new image was crafted under the supervision of U Thaung, a master craftsman from Tavoy (now Dawei), and was consecrated in 1973. This Buddha image features large custom-made glass eyes from Naga Glass Factory, adding to its distinct appearance.
The temple is situated near Kandawgyi Lake and is a popular site for both locals and tourists. The temple houses 33 smaller statues behind the reclining Buddha, each representing a different mudra, making it a unique place of interest in Yangon.
