Chavez de la Rosa Cultural Center, Arequipa

The Chavez de la Rosa Cultural Center is one of Arequipa’s most vibrant cultural spaces. Housed in La Casa Arrospide, the mansion was erected in 1743 and is affectionately nicknamed the “talking house” for its carved messages on the city’s signature ashlar stone. This striking colonial residence provides an elegant backdrop for a modern hub of creativity, blending centuries-old history with contemporary artistic life.

Since its official opening on August 11, 2017, the center has become a cornerstone of Arequipa’s cultural landscape. Once called the Chavez de la Rosa Cultural Complex, it has transformed the historic mansion into a lively venue that hosts the work of both renowned national artists and young local talents, while also welcoming international guests. Its mission is not only to preserve heritage but also to foster artistic innovation, giving the city a space where tradition and modern expression meet.

The center features eight galleries that, over the past five years, have presented nearly 400 exhibitions, offering visitors a wide range of artistic perspectives. Alongside these exhibitions, its Friday evening program has brought music, theater, and performance into the open courtyard, making art accessible to all and creating a vibrant communal atmosphere.
