Chiesa di Santa Maria in Corte (Church of Santa Maria in Corte), Rimini

The Church of Santa Maria in Corte, also known as Santa Maria dei Servi, is a Catholic church located in Rimini. It is an architectural testament to the city's layered history and the artistic evolution of ecclesiastical structures. The church’s origins trace back to 1317 when the Malatesta family donated land to the Servants of Mary (Servi di Maria), who initially built a small chapel. The chapel soon gave way to a larger structure, constructed to accommodate the needs of the growing religious community.

Located near the Tiberius Bridge at the end of Corso d'Augusto, the church originally featured a single nave and contained numerous altars and works of art. A notable feature was the apse area with three chapels, the central one being the largest. One of the chapels was sponsored by the noble Agolanti family, whose coat of arms can still be seen on a pilaster along the church's side.

Between 1774 and 1777, architect Gaetano Stegani renovated the church and its convent, with Baroque artist Antonio Trentanove adding plaster decorations. After the Servite Order was suppressed in 1798, the Dominicans briefly managed the church, bringing art from San Cataldo before leaving in 1799. Designated as the parish of Santa Maria in Corte in 1806, the church saw its façade rebuilt in 1894 by Giuseppe Urbani, who also completed the bell tower and adorned the interiors with gilding by Luigi Samoggia.

The church once housed 14th-century frescoes, some of which were detached in the early 20th century and showcased in a 1935 exhibition in Rimini. While some fragments were lost, remnants of these frescoes remain in the former parish cloister and the lower compartment of the bell tower, preserving the artistic heritage of the period.

Today, the Church of Santa Maria in Corte continues to reflect its layered history through its architecture, artistic legacy, and the transformations it has undergone over the centuries.
