Church of the Dominican Monastery of Saint Mary of the Gratitude, Sorrento

The Church of Saint Mary of the Gratitude (Santa Maria delle Grazie), located in the heart of Sorrento, is a significant historical and architectural landmark dating back to around 1556. It was commissioned by Bernardina Donnorso, a noblewoman from Sorrento, next to a women’s monastery. This proximity to the monastery underscores its importance in the religious and community life of the area.

Inside the church, there are remarkable artworks by Silvestro Buono Junior, notably the painting above the main altar depicting the Madonna of the Gratitude, after whom the church is named. Other notable works include portraits of Sant’Antonino and San Vincenzo Ferreri.

Upon entering, visitors encounter images of Saint Dominick and the Madonna of the Rosary on the right, while on the left are representations of Saint Thomas of Aquinas and the Madonna’s Visit to Saint Elizabeth. These artworks contribute to the spiritual atmosphere and provide insight into religious themes of the time.

The interior of the church is also adorned with beautiful polychrome marble on the altars and a majolica floor displaying intricate designs, reflecting the skill of Neapolitan artisans.

A unique architectural feature of the church is its "gelosie," or gratings, made of decorated wood in the late 16th century. These allowed the secluded nuns to attend mass without being seen, integrating the monastery’s life with the church’s functions.

A significant devotional piece in the church is the statue of Christ crowned with thorns, believed to have performed miracles, attracting believers and admirers alike.
