Chiesa Santa Maria in Organo, Verona

Chiesa Santa Maria in Organo, Verona

Verona possesses a deeply storied past, and this historical richness is evident in its history, artistic creations, and places of devotion. Many of the city's churches, in truth, house artworks of notable significance, approaching the level of museum-worthy pieces. Among these, the Roman Catholic church, Chiesa Santa Maria in Orango, stands out prominently.

Dating back to the eighth century, this place of worship was crafted by the hands of Michele Sanmicheli. It once served as the residence for a Benedictine abbey and operated as a parish under the authority of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Over time, the church underwent reconstruction after the earthquake of 1117, as well as during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Situated on the Piazzetta Santa, it stands as the city's most ancient religious edifice, garnering considerable attention from tourists.

Upon stepping into the church's interior, one is met with a layout following the form of a Latin cross, characterized by a central nave flanked by two aisles. Notably, it houses artworks contributed by notable names such as Girolamo Savoldo, Domenico Morone, Francesco Morone, and Antonio Balestra. The church's bell tower was masterminded by Giovanni da Verona, while the frescoes were envisioned by Nicole Goelfine and Francesco Caroto. Furthermore, the church boasts one of the oldest functioning organs in the region. As for its exterior, composed of tuff, white brick, and marble, it remained incomplete in its construction.
