Choupal National Forest, Coimbra
The Choupal National Forest (Mata Nacional do Choupal) is a cherished green space in Coimbra, offering a natural retreat just a short distance from the city center. Spanning approximately 198 acres (80 hectares), this forest extends along the right bank of the Mondego River for about two kilometers, serving as a hub for outdoor activities such as jogging, walking, cycling, and horse riding.
Originally planted in 1791 under the direction of engineer and priest Estevao Cabral, Choupal was part of a strategic effort to mitigate the floods of the Mondego River. The grove of poplars (choupos, from which Choupal gets its name) was intended to stabilize the riverbed and control silt deposition. Over time, other tree species, including plane trees, beeches, laurels, and eucalyptus, have enriched the forest’s biodiversity.
Choupal is more than a recreational space—it holds deep cultural significance. It has been immortalized in poetry and literature, often associated with the nostalgia of Coimbra’s university students. The forest provides a serene atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy quiet moments accompanied only by the sounds of birds and the flowing river.
Choupal is a beloved destination for locals and visitors alike, providing shaded retreats perfect for reading, relaxation, and escaping the summer heat. Despite some preservation concerns, recent restoration efforts have improved safety and accessibility, ensuring a pleasant experience for all.
Easily accessible via the EN111 national highway, which connects Coimbra to Figueira da Foz, or from Coimbra-B train station, Choupal remains an emblematic natural landmark where history, culture, and leisure harmoniously intertwine.

Coimbra Introduction Walking Tour
The ancient Roman city of Aeminium, by the Mondego River, eventually became the city of Coimbra. The modern Machado de Castro National Museum rests on the remains of a medieval bishop's palace. The palace was supported by an old cryptoporticus and Roman forum. The forum was the seed of the political and religious center of a city always reborn.
