Chronicle of Georgia, Tbilisi

Chronicle of Georgia, Tbilisi

Perched on a hillside overlooking the Tbilisi Sea, the Chronicle of Georgia is a surreal monument sculpted by the celebrated Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli. This massive composition of 16 towering pillars-each rising over 30 meters-blends bronze, stone, and copper to narrate the epic sweep of Georgian history through vivid visual storytelling.

Commissioned in the mid-1980s but never fully completed, the Chronicle of Georgia remains an unfinished masterpiece whose colossal scale and rich detail make it feel both modern and timeless.

Each pillar is meticulously etched: the lower halves depict scenes from the life of Christ, such as the Resurrection and the Last Supper, while the upper segments spotlight Georgian monarchs, heroes, and legendary figures-Queen Tamar, King Mirian III, the poet Shota Rustaveli, and iconographic scenes from “The Martyrdom of the Holy Queen Shushanik”, one of the oldest known works of Georgian literature.

Positioned above the city’s northern reaches on Mount Keeni, the monument offers breathtaking panoramic views-on one side, the serene expanse of the Tbilisi Sea; on the other, the city’s colorful Soviet-era neighborhoods stretching into the distance.
