National Bank of Georgia, Tbilisi

National Bank of Georgia, Tbilisi

The National Bank of Georgia plays a pivotal role in Tbilisi's cultural and economic landscape. Established initially on December 31, 1919, as the State Bank of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, it assumed its modern form in 1991 following the restoration of Georgian independence. Enshrined in the constitution, it remains fully independent, with its governance overseen by a council.

Today’s headquarters, developed after a design competition won by GLMV Architecture Inc. in collaboration with Spectrum LLC, embraces a circular layout imbued with symbolic meaning. The building’s 60-meter outer diameter and 28-meter inner diameter create a central atrium crowned by a skylight that echoes the Bank’s logo-invoking notions of continuity, stability, and the dynamic role of the Bank in Georgia’s economic life.

The interior is organized around the central atrium, with gently sloping ramps connecting levels in lieu of traditional corridors or staircases. This fluid layout, complemented by panoramic lifts and abundant daylight, creates an open, welcoming environment-enhancing circulation and visual connections between spaces.
