Church of Saint Sabba the Sanctified, Budva
In the southwestern part of Budva's Old Town, near the city walls and close to the church of Santa Maria in Punta, lies the small 12th-century church of Church of Saint Sabba the Sanctified. This Romanesque, single-nave structure, with a semicircular apse facing east, lacks a bell tower and has long been a subject of historical debate, particularly concerning its exact construction date and whether it originally served Orthodox or Catholic worshippers. The church is mentioned in a charter by Balša III Balšić about the founding of the Praskvica Monastery, which refers to a Budva priest named Bjeladin who served there.
One notable aspect of the church's history is the evidence that, during Venetian rule, both Catholic and Orthodox rites were conducted here due to religious tolerance. The church underwent significant restoration after the 1979 earthquake, during which an inscription on a stone slab at the base of a niche in the eastern bay of the south wall was discovered, dating the church to 1141. This restoration also revealed damaged frescoes beneath the interior plaster, likely from the 12th century and painted in the Byzantine style of that era.
