Church of St. Ifigenia, Sao Paulo

Church of St. Ifigenia, Sao Paulo

The Church of Santa Efigenia, also known as the Basilica of the Most Blessed Sacrament, is a Catholic basilica situated at the intersection of Casper Libero Avenue and Santa Ifigenia Street in Sao Paulo. The Santa Ifigenia viaduct terminates in front of this remarkable church.

Positioned near the Anhangabaú Valley, the present-day Church of Santa Ifigenia stands on the grounds of one of the oldest chapels in the city, namely the Chapel of Our Lady of Conception, which was erected before 1720. This initial chapel underwent renovations in 1794, and in 1809, the parish of Our Lady of the Conception and Santa Ifigenia was established by the decree of Prince Regent Don João VI.

From 1930 to 1954, the church of Santa Ifigenia served as the city's cathedral due to the construction of the Cathedral of Saint Paul. On April 18, 1958, Pope Pius XII bestowed the title of basilica upon the church, renaming it the Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1992, it gained protection from the Municipal Council of Historic, Cultural, and Environmental Preservation of the City of Sao Paulo.

Why You Should Visit:
One of the oldest chapels in Sao Paulo, with all ceilings painted, preserved stained glass, and beautiful floor; a little weathered and dark inside but cozy in its simplicity and very picturesque.

Tip:
Plan your visit on weekdays during business hours as it is a desert area at night.
