Martinelli Skyscraper, Sao Paulo
The Martinelli Skyscraper stands as Sao Paulo's inaugural skyscraper, embodying the Beaux-Art architectural style. Its visionary, Giuseppe Martinelli, collaborated with architect Irmãos Lacombe to bring this iconic structure to life. Positioned at the intersection of Saint Benedict, Saint John Avenue, and Libero Badare, construction commenced in 1922, and its grand opening took place in 1929. If you wish to savor the breathtaking panoramic vista from the rooftop, securing permission from the building manager is essential.
Initially, the esteemed Giuseppe Martinelli resided in a luxurious four-story penthouse atop the skyscraper, adorned with a splendid garden and terrace. Unfortunately, due to financial hardships, he was compelled to relinquish ownership of the building to the Italian government in 1934. The edifice remained under Italian ownership until Brazil confiscated all Italian properties during World War II. In recognition of its historical significance, the skyscraper attained the esteemed status of a designated historic landmark in 1992.
Throughout its history, the Martinelli Skyscraper has housed numerous political party offices. Presently, it accommodates the Department of Municipal Housing and Planning, Emurb, Sindicato dos Bancários de SP, Cohab-SP, as well as several shops. Local legend has it that the building is haunted by a faceless ghost, adding an air of mystery to its allure.
