Church of St. Julian and St. Basilisa, Salamanca

Church of St. Julian and St. Basilisa, Salamanca

The Church of Saint Julian and Saint Basilisa stands as a remarkable testament to centuries of architectural evolution. Founded in 1107 during the city's medieval repopulation under King Alfonso VI and the French nobleman Raymond of Burgundy, its original Romanesque structure now blends harmoniously with later Gothic and Baroque influences. Although most of the original layout is gone, several defining Romanesque elements still remain-including the north portal with its sculpted archivolts, richly detailed corbels, and carved animal motifs-and the sturdy, arched base of the tower.

As Salamanca grew, so did the church's structure and meaning. The original Romanesque design was extensively renovated between the 16th and 18th centuries, introducing new architectural features such as a Gothic-style vault over the main chapel, a reconstructed upper tower, and ornate decorative updates throughout.

Step inside, and your gaze is drawn to a layered Baroque masterpiece dating from the 17th century. It prominently features the Virgin of Remedies accompanied by Saint Julian and Saint Basilisa, with additional figures such as Saint Joseph and Saint Joachim, and beautiful reliefs depicting the Assumption of the Virgin and Christ among the doctors. Also on display is a captivating painting of the Immaculate Conception from 1622, attributed to the renowned Spanish artist José Antolínez.

The church also holds profound historical significance through its connection to Francisco Ramos del Manzano, preceptor and tutor to King Carlos II. His tomb, dating from 1671, lies within the church.
