Church of the Virgin Mary of Foreigners, Corfu

Church of the Virgin Mary of Foreigners, Corfu

Nestled in the heart of Corfu Town, just opposite the Church of Saint Ioannis and across from the statue of Georgios Theotokis, the Church of the Virgin Mary of Foreigners (Panagia ton Xenon) is a captivating Orthodox sanctuary born of 17th-century history. Built in 1689 by the Epirus-born priest Nicodemus for refugees fleeing Ottoman rule, the church opened its doors in 1690. Its foundation is a testament to the resilience of these newcomers-who, though integral to Corfu’s multicultural fabric, were regarded as “foreigners,” hence the church’s evocative name.

Architecturally, the church presents a modest yet compelling three‑aisled basilica capped with a triangular wooden tiled roof. Its façade may seem unassuming, but inside lies a realm of ornate beauty: a Baroque-style gilded iconostasis stretching 5.45 meters, adorned with grape‑vine carvings and restored by Neapolitan craftsmen in 1875. Among its treasures is the rare "Riza Lessay" icon (1814) by M. Mantsavinos, and a uniquely expressive pulpit depicting Christ driving the merchants from the temple.

Beyond its artistic splendor, the church plays a living role in Corfiot tradition: on Holy Saturday, it is the scene of the dramatic “earthquake”-churchgoers strike their seats to recreate the tremors of the Resurrection, a powerful local Easter custom. Visitors to Corfu Town should not miss this intimate and meaningful site, rich in history, art, and spiritual vibrancy. Its location amid charming streets, cafés, and local life makes it a memorable addition to any walking tour through the Old Town.
