Climate Pledge Arena, Seattle

Climate Pledge Arena, located in Seattle Center, is a historic indoor arena originally built for the 1962 World's Fair. It underwent significant redevelopment from 2018 to 2021 while preserving its historical exterior and roof. The arena is recognized as a Seattle Landmark (2017), listed on the Washington Heritage Register, and included in the National Register of Historic Places (2018). It currently has a seating capacity of 17,151 for ice hockey and 18,300 for basketball.

Climate Pledge Arena serves as the home venue for various teams, including the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Seattle Storm of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the Seattle University Redhawks men's basketball team, and the Rat City Roller Derby league affiliated with the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. Additionally, the arena has hosted the women's basketball tournament of the Pac-12 Conference.

The arena was once home to the Seattle SuperSonics from 1967 to 1978 and again from 1985 to 2008. Renovations occurred in 1994, leading to games being played at the Tacoma Dome. It was renamed KeyArena in 1995 after KeyCorp acquired naming rights. Additionally, it hosted the Seattle Totems from 1964 to 1975 and the Seattle Thunderbirds from 1989 to 2008.

Climate Pledge Arena is the first publicly financed arena in the region solely supported by facility-generated income. Initially, the arena benefited from a settlement payment following the SuperSonics' departure in 2008. However, the period between the team's departure and the NHL's arrival led to reduced activity and revenue, leaving little reserve for anything beyond basic maintenance. The naming rights agreement with KeyCorp ended in 2010, but the KeyArena name remained until its closure in 2018. In June 2020, Amazon acquired the naming rights, emphasizing climate change awareness.
