Columbus Square, Port of Spain

Columbus Square, Port of Spain

Columbus Square, a historic gem in Port of Spain, lies just steps away from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Established in 1880 to honor Christopher Columbus, who discovered Trinidad in 1498, the square is a tribute to the island’s connection to the explorer's famed transatlantic voyage. It was officially inaugurated on September 18, 1880, with a ceremony led by Archbishop Gonin and attended by Governor W.A.G. Young.

Situated at the corner of Independence Square and Duncan Street, the square boasts a bronze statue of Columbus, a gift from Mr. Hypolite Borde, a prominent cocoa proprietor and Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. This statue, elegantly set atop a fountain, is a central feature of the square, which was envisioned as a beautification project for the area. The grounds are neatly landscaped with shrubs and gravel pathways, making it a serene retreat in the heart of the city.

Historically, Columbus Square was the site of Port of Spain's original Roman Catholic church. Today, it remains a cherished part of the city, blending historical significance with urban charm.
