Congregation Kol Tefillah, Santa Cruz
Congregation Kol Tefillah in Santa Cruz is a traditional Jewish community closely affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Since its establishment, it has been dedicated to fostering a strong Jewish identity, emphasizing the importance of religious values, and supporting both the State of Israel and the global Jewish community, Klal Yisrael. This commitment includes educating its members about their connections to the land and people of Israel.
Kol Tefillah is unique in several respects. It is the only Conservative synagogue in Santa Cruz, operating without a rabbi or paid staff, and relies on its membership of approximately 50 families. These members are deeply involved in providing traditional holiday and Shabbat services and ensuring a Conservative Jewish education for their children. Leadership of the services is volunteer-based, with members actively participating in and leading religious practices.
Education is a cornerstone of Kol Tefillah’s ethos, with members teaching one another Hebrew, Jewish history, and liturgical chants. This cooperative learning environment extends to the welcoming and training of new members. The congregation also benefits from guest lecturers and in-house classes, fostering a vibrant community spirit.
A significant milestone was reached when the congregation moved to its permanent location on Washington Street in downtown Santa Cruz. This transition was marked by a ceremonial procession from Unity Temple, where the congregation's three Torah scrolls were transferred to their new home. The new space was consecrated with mezuzahs affixed to the doors, and the community celebrated this event with an all-night study session during Shavuot.
The congregation’s move to a new facility has consolidated many of its functions and resources under one roof. This includes a unified library, enhanced space for classes and lectures, unrestricted Shabbat services, and the addition of a weekly Wednesday minyan. This minyan is particularly important as it complements other local services, ensuring daily opportunities for communal prayer. With its enhanced facilities, Kol Tefillah is not only looking towards a promising future for its current members but is also eager to welcome new families to join its thriving community.

Historical Buildings Walk
Apart from surfboard-filled shores, Santa Cruz is also rich in history reflected in the old buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While none of Santa Cruz's historic architecture sprang up overnight, a great deal of it was lost, or severely damaged, in a single go on October 17, 1989 as a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Still, some of the historic buildings have... view more
