Cool Spring Reservoir Park, Wilmington
Cool Spring Reservoir Park, established in 1877, sits on over 30 acres of land in Wilmington’s West Side and serves as a key element of the Cool Spring Historic District. The park, developed by the Wilmington Water Department, takes its name from local natural springs and the nearby estate of statesman Caesar A. Rodney. Its creation spurred residential growth, and the park quickly became a communal hub for the surrounding middle-class neighborhood, known for its late-19th-century Gothic Revival and Queen Anne homes.
The park blends natural and urban features, offering walking trails, open lawns, and a tree-filled landscape shaped by a tradition of annual plantings during the Wilmington Flower Market, held here from the 1920s through the 1950s. Remnants of this horticultural legacy remain in the form of a diverse canopy of trees. The northern portion of the park includes both the historic aboveground reservoir and a newer underground system. A paved 2.4-km loop trail winds through the area, providing an easy, accessible route for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
Cool Spring Park is especially inviting for families and casual visitors. Decorative lighting, benches, and a playground create a welcoming atmosphere, while the promenade and pond lend a tranquil feel. The trail, open year-round, is suitable for leashed dogs and accommodates wheelchairs or strollers, though some areas with steps may require caution or assistance.
Surrounded by notable landmarks like the Cool Spring Elementary School and the former Pumping Station, the park remains at the heart of a historic neighborhood that was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Wilmington Introduction Walking Tour
Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware. It lies at the confluence of the Brandywine and Christina Rivers. Wilmington was originally home to the Lenape people. However, the land was purchased from Chief Mattahorn by the Swedish South Company in 1638. They built Fort Christina at the mouth of what would later be called the Christina River.
