Craft in the Bay Gallery, Cardiff

Craft in the Bay Gallery, Cardiff

The Craft in the Bay Gallery, situated at the southern end of Lloyd George Avenue in Cardiff Bay, is a notable exhibition and craft retail venue. Designed by architect Chris Elford, the gallery is managed by the charitable arts organization, The Makers Guild in Wales. Its strategic location places it opposite the Wales Millennium Centre and near the Senedd building, embedding it within a cultural and administrative hub of the city.

This gallery is housed within the historical "D" Shed, a Grade II listed building that was originally an industrial warehouse beside Bute East Dock. The building features a cast-iron frame with distinctive cruciform columns and a roof structure composed of riveted sections marked 'Rhymney', indicating manufacture at the Rhymney Ironworks. The structure's design includes a five 20-foot bay length and a two 20-foot bay width, and it is one of the few mid-nineteenth century buildings remaining in Cardiff Bay.

Originally serving as a transit warehouse and later as a garage workshop, the "D" Shed underwent significant transformation starting in late 2001. In 2002, the building was meticulously dismantled, relocated from its initial site next to Bute East Dock, and reassembled at its current location with a modern extension.

The refurbished building combines historical architecture with contemporary design elements. It features sheer-glazed walls on two sides, allowing clear views into the exhibition space, and includes a modern extension that contrasts with the historic core. This extension houses demonstration studios, meeting space, office areas, and a café under a striking pointed roof that extends over an outdoor seating area. The renovation efforts were recognized with a British Archaeological Award, highlighting its success in preserving historical essence while adapting to modern functional needs.
