Dairy Cottage, Salisbury

Dairy Cottage is a Grade II listed historic building in Stratford-sub-Castle, set within a quiet village landscape on the northern edge of Salisbury. Dating mainly from the 17th century, with later 18th-century changes, it reflects the area’s older agricultural character and its links to small-scale dairy farming.

The cottage forms part of a preserved group with nearby Little Thatches and Old Forge Cottage, creating a strong sense of the village’s pre-industrial street scene. Its roadside position also reflects the linear layout of the settlement, shaped by Old Sarum’s slopes on one side and the River Avon water meadows on the other.

Architecturally, Dairy Cottage is noted for its steep thatched roof, stonework, red brick dressings, flint banding, and likely local green sandstone footings. Some materials may have been reused from older buildings in the area, a practical habit in places shaped by centuries of settlement.
