Mawarden Court, Salisbury

Mawarden Court is a Grade II* listed country house with 16th- and 17th-century origins, later altered in 1673, the early 1700s, and the Victorian period. Its name comes from the medieval Mawardyn family. Later, Thomas Pitt acquired the estate, linking it to the Pitt family’s wealth, political influence, and the famous Regent Diamond.

Built of dressed limestone with tiled roofs, the house combines Tudor and early Georgian features. Its entrance front is recognised for balanced gables, stone-mullioned windows, and a carved Latin inscription above the porch, Parva sed apta domino ("Small, but suitable for its lord"), dated 1673. In the 1830s, the house was reduced in size while keeping its balanced façade. Inside are historic fireplaces, oak stairs, wood panelling, and marble details.

Mawarden Court also has strong links to British political history. The Pitt family used Old Sarum’s “rotten borough” to build political influence. William Pitt the Elder represented it from 1735 to 1747 before becoming Prime Minister. In the 19th century, it served as the vicarage and was home to hymnist Edward Caswall. Today, it remains private but retains strong links to the Pitt family and Old Sarum.
