Victoria Park, Salisbury

Victoria Park is the oldest public park in Salisbury, opened in 1887 during Queen Victoria’s reign. Its creation was supported by local residents, who raised £1,550 through public subscription. The idea came from Frederick Griffin, a local timber merchant and former mayor, who is remembered with a blue plaque in the park.

The park combines open lawns, mature trees, flower beds, and paths for walking or resting. For many years, a Victorian bandstand stood at its centre, hosting music and community events, but it was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. Formal flower beds later replaced it. The park is also known for its horse-chestnut trees, which have long made it a favourite place for children collecting conkers in autumn.

Victoria Park has several unusual historical links. During the Second World War, Glenn Miller performed here for Allied troops, and in 1943 world heavyweight champion Joe Louis took part in an exhibition boxing match on the grounds. Visitors can also see the statue of Sidney Herbert, a 19th-century MP closely linked with Florence Nightingale, which was moved here from the Market Square.
