Damsgård Manor, Bergen

Damsgård Manor, Bergen

Damsgård Manor, nestled in Bergen, stands as an exceptional example of Rococo architecture and is arguably the most well-preserved wooden building from the 18th century in Europe. Its history traces back to Viking times, with documented evidence of its existence as a populated center by 1427, initially as church property. Post-Reformation in 1536, it transitioned from crown ownership to foreign hands.

The estate's name likely originates from Dam Tønneson, who inherited it in 1654 from Tønnes Klausson, a recipient of Frederick II of Denmark's favor for his service in the Northern Seven Years' War. The manor's earliest structures date around 1720 during Severin Seehusen’s ownership, characterized by vivid red and green colors. By 1731, documentation provides insights into the general layout of the main house, which functioned both as a farm and a recreational estate.

Distinctively, Damsgård Manor showcases Rococo's architectural flourishes, unusual for a wooden structure in Europe. The facade is crafted to enhance the house's dimensions, including two faux windows for symmetry. The interior has been meticulously restored to reflect its early 18th-century design, alongside adaptations from various periods of the manor's history.

The estate features three gardens: the symmetric "Master’s garden" and the less structured "Mistress's garden" inside the walls, and the "English garden" outside. Restored in 1998 with assistance from the University of Bergen’s botanists, these gardens echo their 18th-century origins, with the English garden evolving into its current form around 1830.

Today, Damsgård Manor not only serves as a historical monument but also as a testament to the architectural and horticultural practices of its time, providing a vivid glimpse into Norway’s rich cultural heritage.

It is a wonder Bergen has had so many fires in its history, considering it has averaged 200 days a year of rain. So, why the fires?

Flames leapt across the narrow streets. The compact wooden buildings were easy prey. In 1702 90% of the city was destroyed. Disasters continued through the years. Finally, in 1916, a new idea in prevention emerged. The way to stop a fire was to starve it.

Surprising as it may appear, but the seemingly small city of Bergen for centuries had been the largest in all of the Nordic countries. It also remained so for Norway until the 1830s. Apart from being the country's former capital (back in the 13th century), Bergen is well-known primarily for its astoundingly beautiful cityscape, formed by the backdrop of mountains and serene waterfront, much...  view more
