Dar Moqri (Moqri Palace), Fes
The historic Moqri Palace, nestled within the ancient medina of Fes, bears witness to the wealth and prominence of the Moqri family, merchants who ascended to prominence within the royal government during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This architectural marvel comprises two grand residences, constructed separately yet adjacent to each other, by different members of the Moqri family.
The older palace, known for its richly adorned interior, is also distinguished by its expansive terraced garden. Meanwhile, the second palace features a lengthy courtyard that blends Italianate elements with traditional Moroccan ornamentation. Additionally, a distinct palace known as Riad Driss Moqri
was erected further north.
Regarded as one of the finest examples of late 19th and early 20th-century domestic architecture in Fes, the Moqri Palace spans an impressive two-and-a-half acres (or one hectare). Its layout deviates somewhat from the typical Moroccan mansion of the era, with two distinct sections-the main house and the garden area-oriented along different axes, rather than a single symmetrical axis.
The northern garden, divided into three terraces, offers panoramic views of the cityscape. The lower terrace, resembling a traditional riad garden, features intersecting paths, a central fountain, and lush vegetation including tall cypress trees. Various small structures and kiosks were built around the garden's periphery, once serving as a music pavilion and a hammam, but were later repurposed for contemporary use.

Created by the French in the early 20th century and developed mainly in the 1910s, this district was designed to bring order, space, and modern infrastructure to the city. Wide streets replaced narrow lanes, open squares replaced hidden courtyards,... view more
