De Tongelreep, Eindhoven

The National Swimming Centre de Tongelreep in Eindhoven is one of Europe's premier aquatic facilities. Designed to accommodate both professional athletes and recreational swimmers, this state-of-the-art complex offers a variety of pools and training areas, making it a hub for competitive swimming in the country.

De Tongelreep comprises several specialized pools, including a 25-meter pool, a reactivation pool, and an instruction pool. The complex's most prestigious facility is the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, named after the Dutch Olympic champion. Within this stadium, athletes train and compete in a 10-lane 50-meter competition pool, a 20×25-meter diving pool, and a 4-lane 50-meter training pool. The training pool is equipped with the Vision training system, which utilizes thirteen cameras for detailed performance analysis-an advanced system unique in Europe.

A significant part of the complex's history includes its recreational area, which was closed in 2016. This section featured an indoor tropical wave pool, multiple water slides, whirlpools, and a lazy river. Visitors could also relax in Turkish steam baths and hot tubs infused with aromatic scents. The outdoor pool, open in warm weather, included a sunbathing lawn, additional slides, and interconnected pools of varying depths.

Opened in 2006, the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium replaced an outdated 50-meter competition pool and quickly became the home of Dutch elite swimming. It boasts a seating capacity of 3,000 spectators and has hosted major international competitions, including the European Swimming Championships 2008. The stadium was officially named after Van den Hoogenband in 2008, following his retirement from competitive swimming.

De Tongelreep remains the Netherlands' largest indoor swimming facility and a top European aquatic center. Though its recreational area closed, it continues to train elite swimmers with state-of-the-art facilities, maintaining its status as a hub of Dutch and international aquatic excellence.
