Democratic Government Museum, Melaka
The Democratic Government Museum is situated on Saint Paul's Hill in Malacca City. This museum offers a comprehensive overview of the development and practice of parliamentary democracy in Malaysia. The building itself has historical significance, as it was formerly the Malacca State Legislative Assembly. The foundation stone of this building was laid on August 31, 1961, by the then Governor, Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Haji Abdul Malek bin Yusof S.M.N, D.M.K.
For decades, this building served as the central hub where Malacca State Legislative Members convened to discuss and pass local bills and rights, as well as to present the annual State budget. The Assembly was chaired by an elected Speaker, with legislative members elected by the people every five years or after the dissolution of the Assembly. Eligible candidates had to be residents of Malacca and over the age of 21.
In February 2000, the State Legislative Assembly relocated to Ayer Keroh as part of the State government's initiative to centralize its management and administrative functions. Since then, the former Assembly building has been transformed into the Democratic Government Museum. This museum now houses extensive information and documentation on Malaysia’s governance, with a particular focus on its democratic practices.
Visitors to the museum can explore a variety of exhibits that detail the functioning of Malaysia's political system, the chronological events leading to the nation’s independence, and records of Malaysia's achievements in governance. The museum provides a unique opportunity to discover the past of the Malaysian government and learn about the intricate workings of its governance system. It is a place where history and democracy come to life, offering educational insights into the political evolution of Malaysia.
