Downse’s Pub, Waterford
Downse’s Pub, also known as simply “Downses” by locals, is a cherished gem among the city’s taverns. Established in 1797 as a spirit merchant and later transformed into a pub in the 1960s, it has since remained in the same family for six generations, preserving a legacy rarely found today.
As you step inside, you're transported to an atmosphere that’s delightfully old-school and richly atmospheric. The interior remains largely unchanged since the 1960s, featuring low lighting, vintage telephones, deep carpeting, and a series of distinct rooms-each with its own character and charm. Adding to Downes’ distinctive character is the squash court, still in use today, along with a full-sized snooker table.
True to its roots, Downes’ continues to bottle its own whiskey blend, famously known as Henry Downes No. 9, making it one of the few pubs in Ireland still distilling on-site. The blend’s character is enriched by water drawn from an old well uncovered during renovations-likely tied to the pub’s early role in supplying sailors and traders-giving each glass a touch of legend.

Waterford Introduction Walking Tour
Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland, whose stones still resonate with the echoes of its vibrant past. Historically the site of a Viking settlement, it emerged in 914 AD. The name “Waterford” derives from the Old Norse “Vedrarfjord,” meaning "ram-" or "windy fjord," which speaks to the city's strategic coastal location and tempestuous history.
