Dundas Street Centre United Church, London
Dundas Street Centre United Church reflects a long history of religious and community life. The congregation traces its origins to a Wesleyan Methodist group formed in 1856, which first met in a small cottage. A larger church built in 1870 was destroyed by fire on February 13, 1895. The present building was constructed soon after and dedicated in May 1896. In 1925, the congregation joined the United Church of Canada during the national church union.
The building is a Romanesque Revival structure with red brick and stone, rounded arches, and a solid form. Three towers and a slate roof define its exterior. Inside, the sanctuary follows an amphitheatre layout centered on the pulpit and choir, with a domed ceiling and a semicircular balcony around three sides. It also features a pipe organ with over 3,000 pipes, along with woodwork and stained glass.
Over time, the church expanded its role beyond regular worship. It supports outreach programs such as meal services and clothing distribution, including the “Out of the Cold” program and the Good Samaritan Cupboard. The building is also used for concerts and choral performances, making use of its acoustics. It continues to serve both religious and community functions.
