Dutch Square, Melaka (must see)

Dutch Square is the best-known landmark in Melaka. It is also called Red Square because of the red-painted historic buildings surrounding it. At the center stands the Queen Victoria Fountain, a British-era memorial erected after the monarch’s death. Its inscription records that it was raised by the people of Malacca in 1904.

The main Dutch-period buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries and feature thick walls, shuttered windows, heavy doors, and iron fittings. The former Dutch City Hall, known as the Stadthuys, is the large red building on the south side of the square, directly south of the fountain. Built in 1645, it originally contained the residence and administrative offices of the Dutch governors and officials.

Christ Church Melaka stands on the east side of the square. Construction began in 1741 and was completed in 1753, making it the oldest functioning Protestant church in Malaysia. Originally Dutch Reformed, it later became an Anglican church under British rule. The Malaysia Youth Museum occupies the large red building immediately north of Christ Church, or to the left when facing the church from the square.

The Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower stands just west of the fountain. It was erected in 1886 by businessman and philanthropist Tan Jiak Kim in memory of his father, Tan Beng Swee, and represents the contribution of Melaka’s Chinese merchant community to the city. The 0 km Melaka marker is immediately west of the clock tower, close to the river side of the square.

Dutch Square is popular with visitors because its compact layout brings together landmarks from the Dutch and British periods. It also provides convenient access to the Melaka River, Saint Paul’s Hill, and A Famosa. Numerous stalls line the surrounding streets, offering souvenirs, snacks, and drinks.
