Eagle Gate, Salt Lake City
More in the form of an arch than a gate, this monument was erected in 1859 to commemorate the entrance to Brigham Young's property at the mouth of City Creek Canyon. Originally topped by a wooden eagle, it was refurbished several times and eventually replaced by the current 4,000-pound, bronze bird (the original wooden one is now on display at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum at 300 North Main Street). The monument is one of Salt Lake City's best known pioneer landmarks, and its current form is one of Salt Lake City's best standing examples of Mid-Century Modern design.
A good idea would be to stand on the concrete division in the middle of South State Street in order to get the best possible pictures where the Eagle itself is beautifully centered (depending on traffic you may have to show a bit of patience). It certainly can't be missed – an easy sight to view when checking out the downtown SLC area.
