Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz (Eduard-Wallnöfer Square), Innsbruck

Eduard-Wallnöfer Square is one of Innsbruck's principal civic spaces and the administrative heart of Tyrol. Despite its central location, it is a relatively modern square. Until the early 20th century, this area was occupied by private villas, gardens, and a mansion. The adjacent Government Building was constructed in 1938–1939 during the Nazi era, when plans called for the creation of a monumental square honoring Tyrolean National Socialists. The outbreak of the Second World War halted those ambitions, and after the war, the space was reimagined for a very different purpose.

In 1948, the French occupation authorities commissioned the Liberation Monument to commemorate Tyrol's liberation. Since 1994, the square has officially borne the name of Eduard Wallnöfer, governor of Tyrol from 1963 to 1987.

As you cross the square, notice its landscape of sculpted concrete, broad open spaces, and large fountains, which create an inviting setting for public gatherings, concerts, and festivals. At the northern end, look for the Liberation Monument, whose five-columned design deliberately echoes the façade of the Government Building behind it. Crowning the monument is a bronze Austrian eagle, symbolizing the country's restored independence. Continue south to appreciate the square's flowing geometric forms, polished concrete surfaces, and carefully spaced monuments, all framed by views of the Nordkette mountains.
