Eglise Anglicane (Anglican Church), Cannes
Anglican Church (Eglise Anglicane), also known as the Holy Trinity Church, serves as a significant center for Anglican faith and community engagement in the heart of the French Riviera. Founded in the early 1860s, it initially catered to British expatriates drawn to Cannes for its mild winters. Originally intended as a seasonal place of worship, the church quickly adapted to meet the needs of a growing year-round community, reflecting its vitality.
Throughout its history, the church has been supported by the Colonial and Continental Church Society, now known as the Intercontinental Church Society, emphasizing its evangelical Anglican roots.
By 1874, the congregation had expanded significantly, leading to the construction of a larger Victorian Gothic-style church. This expansion showcased the flourishing Anglican presence in Cannes, which at the time boasted three other Anglican churches.
However, the World Wars caused a decline in the British community in Cannes. By the 1960s, the church faced financial challenges that necessitated major repairs beyond its means. A practical solution emerged, with the old site being sold to a developer and a new building constructed in 1972 to accommodate a wider range of church and community activities.
Today, the Holy Trinity Church serves as more than a place of worship for English speakers; it is a dynamic, multicultural congregation that embraces diverse Christian traditions and nationalities among its members. With around 150 attendees, the church represents a rich tapestry of nations and denominations united in their worship of Jesus Christ. This unity extends beyond the church walls and Sunday services, fostering a vibrant community through mid-week prayer groups, home groups, and other activities.
