Eglise Saint-Paul (Saint-Paul Church), Nimes
Saint-Paul Church in Nîmes, located in the Gard department of the Occitanie region, is a neo-Romanesque church known for its significant architectural and historical value. Recognized as a historical monument in 1909, the church stands out with its 62-meter bell tower positioned at the transept crossing. Constructed between 1835 and 1849, the church was designed by architect Charles-Auguste Questel. Notably, all the hinges and locks for the exterior and interior doors were crafted in 1845 under Questel's direction. These were made by ironworker Pierre Boulanger, who also created the notable hinges of the central portal of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
Inside, the church features remarkable murals by Hippolyte Flandrin in the nave and apses, though many of these friezes have suffered significant degradation over time. Additional decorative work in the nave was done by Alexandre Denuelle. The stained glass windows, crafted by master glassmaker Laurent Charles Maréchal from Metz, add to the church's artistic appeal. The organ, constructed in 1848 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, is another notable feature of the church. Despite its historical and artistic significance, the entire building is in need of major restoration work.
