Eglise Sainte-Baudile (Saint-Baudile Church), Nimes

Eglise Sainte-Baudile (Saint-Baudile Church), Nimes

The Saint-Baudile Church is a neo-Gothic church located in the Gard department within the Occitanie region. Constructed between 1867 and 1877, the church was designed by Bordeaux architect Jean-Jules Mondet and dedicated to Saint Baudile, a 3rd-century martyr from Nîmes.

The building features a neo-Gothic design, characterized by its two bell towers on the façade, topped with towering spires that reach 70 meters in height. Inside, the vaults rise to a height of 20 meters. Shaped like a Latin cross, the church measures 65 meters in length and 30 meters in width at the transept, making it the largest church in Nîmes with a capacity of 3,000 people. It is often mistaken for the cathedral located in the center of the Écusson.

The church's organs were crafted by Vincent Cavaillé-Coll, while the stained glass windows were created by Joseph Villiet of the Académie de Bordeaux. The two angel statues with outstretched wings were sculpted by Léopold Morice, and the top of the façade features a statue of Saint Baudile holding the sword and palm of martyrdom, sculpted by Auguste Bosc. Overall, the Saint-Baudile Church bears a resemblance to the Sacré-Cœur Church in Bordeaux, which was also designed by the same architect.
