Musee du Vieux Nimes (Museum of Old Nimes), Nimes
The Museum of Old Nimes was established in 1920 by Henry Bauquier, a local scholar. The museum showcases life in Nîmes from the end of the Middle Ages onwards. It's housed in a former episcopal palace from the late 17th century, situated on Place aux Herbes, near the Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Castor cathedral. The building itself was classified as a historic monument in 1986.
The museum building features a central main structure, bordered by a main courtyard facing the cathedral and a garden. To the east of the cathedral, there's a wing, while the west side has a symmetrical facade. The building also includes outbuildings located to the west of the garden. Historically, the stables were positioned east of the bishopric, with connections to the main courtyard, garden, and rue du Chapitre. Changes in 1910 led to the creation of rue Mathieu-Lacroix, altering the courtyard's access.
Inside, the museum contains various permanent collections, including rooms that reconstruct the textile industry of the 18th and 19th centuries. A notable exhibit focuses on Nîmes serge (denim), detailing its role in the local textile production for over three centuries. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, adding to its dynamic presentation of Nîmes' history.
