Elm Park, Worcester

Elm Park, Worcester

Elm Park in Worcester is historically significant as one of the earliest public parks in the United States funded by public money. It was originally called "New Common" and was acquired in 1854 as part of Worcester's effort to set aside open spaces for its residents.

The park covers 58 acres and offers a mix of history and natural beauty. The southern section, designed in a manner reminiscent of the work of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, is well-developed. In contrast, the northern part is less developed and features woodlands and trails, creating a more rustic and peaceful atmosphere. The park also contains several historic structures.

Elm Park is divided by Park Avenue. The western side has wooded trails and includes facilities such as a lit basketball court and four lit tennis courts near Newton Square. On the eastern side, there are ponds that serve as ice skating rinks in winter and two iconic bridges spanning Lincoln Pond. This area also includes a playground and picnic area for outdoor recreation and relaxation.

One notable event at Elm Park is the Elm Park Summer Concert Series, which has been held since the early 1990s. The series features musical performances, primarily by local artists, offering the community a chance to enjoy outdoor evenings in one of Worcester's well-loved green spaces. Elm Park reflects the city's commitment to preserving natural landscapes for its residents' enjoyment.
