Emerson Cutler Majestic Theatre, Boston

The building's Beaux Arts exterior is a head-turner too, leaving pedestrians as awestruck as the performances leave theater enthusiasts since 1903.

A century from its grand debut, the opulent venue, with its soaring Rococo ceiling, Neoclassical friezes, and stained-glass windows, got the royal treatment with a sumptuous makeover. Emerson College took it under its wing, using the stage for ArtsEmerson, a program that brings contemporary theater from all corners of the world to eager audiences. Still, as this place was initially designed with opera in mind, it's no surprise that the Boston Lyric Opera calls it home for some of its current performances.
