Enfield Falls Mill and Miller's House, Ithaca

Enfield Falls Mill and Miller's House, Ithaca

Nestled within the picturesque Robert H. Treman State Park near Ithaca, the Enfield Falls Mill, and Miller's House is a historic gristmill and former millowner's residence that speaks to the region’s 19th-century industrial past. Built in 1839 by Jared Treman, this turbine-powered mill was a vital part of the local economy, grinding buckwheat, wheat, and coarser grains with its three runs of stones. The mill remained in operation until 1917, a few years before the land was donated to the state and transformed into a public park.

The mill itself is a 2½-story wooden structure, resting on a sturdy stone foundation, a testament to early American engineering. Nearby, the Miller's House, a modest yet graceful Greek Revival–style dwelling, once housed the mill’s owner and today serves as the home of the park superintendent.

The mill and house were officially recognized for their historical significance in 1979 when they were added to the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can explore the well-preserved mill, complete with interpretive signs that provide insight into its operation and role in the community.

The surrounding Robert H. Treman State Park, named after Jared Treman’s grandson Robert H. Treman, is a haven for nature lovers. The park covers 1,074 acres, featuring Enfield Glen, a dramatic gorge where Enfield Creek cascades through a rugged landscape. The park’s most striking waterfalls include Lower Falls (Enfield Falls), a popular lifeguarded swimming area, and Lucifer Falls, a breathtaking 115-foot waterfall. Hikers can enjoy the 2.2-mile gorge trail, winding through rock formations ominously named Devil’s Kitchen and other geological wonders.

For those seeking a blend of history, nature, and adventure, the Enfield Falls Mill and its surrounding park offer a glimpse into the past while showcasing the stunning beauty of the Finger Lakes region.
